The Bigger Picture: SPW Provincial Title Division

One might say that DOOM was at the right place at the right time when he defeated La Sombra for the SPW Provincial Title on November 28th, 2009.  Following a series of gruelling matches, a long standing knee injury and a vicious attack by Reggie Gallagher La Sombra could no longer go on and subsequently lost the title to DOOM.  With La Sombra out of the Provincial Title picture for the first time since the creation of the title new contenders and challengers emerged to take his place.

On January 9th, Billy Blaze defeated BIG BRIAN RICH to snag the top spot in the Provincial Title rankings making him the official #1 Contender.  Throughout 2009 he rose in the rankings with victories over several members of the roster and an impressive showing against ROH star Claudio Castagnoli.  Before he became the official #1 Contender he was granted a title shot against DOOM on December 26th, coming close to becoming champion.  Following that defeat he has gone on to convincingly beat BIG BRIAN RICH and Reggie Gallagher.  As it stands he is in line for another opportunity for the title.

Second in line for an opportunity to face DOOM is Jay Lanza.  Much like Blaze he spent 2009 slowly climbing in the rankings with singles and tag team victories as well as two major battle royal wins in the fall.  He was given a chance at the Provincial title on January 9th but like Blaze was unable to dethrone DOOM.  He’s made it clear that in 2010 he’s gunning for gold and his sights are locked onto the SPW Provincial Title.  With each match Lanza creeps closer and closer to realizing his dream!

Reggie Gallagher is the man that eliminated La Sombra from the division putting the final touches to his already crippling knee injury.  Now he stands third in line to the Provincial Gold.  Suffering a loss to Billy Blaze on January 16th he was unable to steal the #1 Contenders spot in the rankings and sits closely behind Jay Lanza.  Gallagher’s main fault is his divided attention between the Provincial Title division and the Tag Team Title division where he vies to become the inaugural champion with partner Big Cliff Corleone.  He is only a few big victories away from an opportunity to dethrone current champion DOOM.

Shadow Xtreme, a graduate of the SPW Training Academy, has spent the majority of his budding career fighting the odds and always having to prove himself.  His determination is great and his willingness to risk it all with his aerial offence has impressed even the greatest naysayers.  He quickly rose in the rankings but can not afford to lose any matches to maintain his position as the competitions in the Provincial Title division is at an all time high.

Gibby Guerrero has seen his career reinvigorated in recent months with big matches and impressive showings in Selkirk and Arborg.  Much like Shadow Xtreme however he needs to fight valiantly to maintain his spot at #5 in the rankings because not far behind is BIG BRIAN RICH.

RICH is in a peculiar position because he owns the contract of the champion, DOOM!  His main objective is to rise in the rankings and eliminate potential competition to protect DOOM, his number one asset in BIG BRIAN RICH INC.  Together they are qualified for the SPW Tag Team Titles finals and DOOM could very well become the first double champion in SPW history.  While not many would consider RICH to be a major threat, his power lies in his henchmen, DOOM and Mr. Nasty.

In La Sombra’s absence many new challengers have come forward in what has been one of the more competitive title divisions.  Through early 2009 the title changed hands on several occasions like a hot potato but has since gained some stability with a lengthy reign by Ike Idol, La Sombra during his second reign and now DOOM.  If the rankings are any indication, DOOM is in for some stiff competition!
