Once a constant in SPW, the Heavyweight Title division was shaken up when Matt Fairlane lost the title after a 378 day title reign, to Marius under controversial circumstance on October 10th, 2009.
Since winning the championship Marius has been able to turn away challengers and defend the title beyond SPW’s home territory. However, looking at the rankings it seems his biggest challenges are yet to come.
Matt Fairlane has not received a re-match since losing the title while still ranked as #1 contender. Entwined in a battle with Syko, the man who cost him the title, his attention has been on revenge before he turns it back to the title. Deserving of a re-match it would not be shock to any if he were to regain the coveted SPW title.
Just as deserving, some would argue that Chi Chi Cruz should be made #1 contender given his victories over Rob Stardom and his history with Marius. While Marius holds two pinfalls over the Canadian wrestling legend both were with the assistance of Rob Stardom. Furthermore Marius has often been a deciding factor in Cruz’s battle with Stardom interfering on his mentor’s behalf. There is no denying that Chi Chi Cruz is as deserving of a title opportunity than former champion Matt Fairlane.
Jerin Rose and Marius have a history dating back years and to anyone’s knowledge have never liked each other or gotten along. Throughout the first half of 2009 Marius and Rose were embroiled in a bitter and bloody feud that led to many stipulation matches. In their big match encounters Jerin Rose came out the victor, notably in their Blind Fold Match, Singapore Cane Match and their Hair Vs Hair match. Since that time Jerin Rose became TRCW Champion and Marius the SPW Champion. Given the history the argument can be made that Jerin Rose would stand to win the SPW title should he be given the opportunity.
Rob Stardom and Syko, both key members of the Family of Darkness, are highly ranked and serve the purpose of protecting the champion and their dear friend Marius. Syko occupies the time of Matt Fairlane while Stardom does the same with Cruz, keeping them away from proper title opportunities.
These men round out the top five positions in the rankings to Marius’ Steeltown Pro Heavyweight Title. For three and a half months he has been able to remain champion but looking only at the top three contenders it is no stretch of the imagination that his reign could end at any given moment. |
