A Look at Battle for the Belt 1

The first Battle for the Belt took place on Saturday September 27th, 2008 at the Selkirk Memorial Hall.  Battle for the Belt had one central theme, the crowning of the first SPW Heavyweight Champion.

From the debut event on April 19, 2008 to Winnipeg Warfare in August 2008, eight men qualified for a spot in a one night, 8-man tournament.  The 8 participants at the Battle for the Belt were: Rob Stardom, Bobby Fox, Marius, Matt Fairlane, La Sombra, Zack Mercury, Bobby Jay and Jerin Rose.

In the first round Bobby Fox defeated Marius, Zack Mercury defeated La Sombra, Rob Stardom defeated Jerin Rose and Matt Fairlane defeated Bobby Jay.

In the second round Matt Fairlane defeated Zack Mercury and Rob Stardom defeated Bobby Fox.  Both men advanced to the finals in the Main Event that evening.

The evening was capped off with Matt Fairlane defeated Rob Stardom in front of his hometown fans becoming the inaugural SPW Heavyweight Champion.  Fairlane would go on to reign for 13 months and a total of 378 days as champion.  He defended the championship across Manitoba as well as the United-States setting the tone for all future champions.

The second Battle for the Belt takes place on Saturday September 18th, 2010 at the Selkirk Memorial Hall.  Doors will open at 6:30 PM with tickets priced at $12.  This year’s edition of Battle for the Belt will be part of ongoing series of SPW TV Tapings.
